1 Richard VINGOE:  bt 17Aug 1807 Sennen - death Mar 1/4 1869 Scilly 5c 267 bur St Marys, Isles of Scilly.
.............. Baptised 1807 Sennen: base son of Christiana MURLEY -
Father  unknown or at least unnamed and no Bastardy Bonds are recorded. As Richard always carried the surname of Vingoe in the parish records, he was probably the illegitimate son of one of two men [father & son] named Richard Vingoe who lived in Sennen.  Possibly placed  by Richard Vingoe [his grandfather] with the LEGG family of Scilly, to learn trade of a  Master  Mariner, He later married Ursula LEGG, daughter of Stephen LEGG.

Fact 1. Hubert Francis VINGOE  2nd Steward  Mercantile Marine, MV 'Marquette' of West Hartlepool
Fact 2. Cause of Death: Drowned as a result of an attack by an enemy submarine. Ship was total loss.
Fact 3. Son of Joyse Vingoe 19 Alma Place Heamoor Penzance & the late Thomas Vingoe of Scilly.
Fact 4. No known grave: named on the Mercantile Marine Memorial, Trinity Square Gardens, Tower Hill,

A Sentry Stands guard at  the eastern entry to the sunken garden  in the Mercantile Marine Memorial

The SS  Marquette was sunk in the Aegean  23 Oct 1915 by a torpedo from a  German submarine
She was not a hospital ship, marked with a red cross, so sailed without the protection of the Geneva
Convention. The medical staff of No.1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital in Egypt were told to pack up
and by the 19th Oct they were boarding the Marquette in Alexandria. There were 36 nurses, plus eight
officers, nine non-commissioned officers and 77 orderlies of the New Zealand Medical Corps on board..
It was also serving as a large troopship as there were also 500 men and officers of the  ammunition column
of the British 29th Division, plus 500 mules, some horses and many wagons loaded with ammunition.
The crew were, as was usual in the merchant service, probably a mixture of all types and  nationalities
The ship's its home port of registry was West Hartlepool, but I have not been able to find a crew list.

The  S.S. Marquette was previously a steamer of the Red Star line. I suspect there were no survivors
as the survival rate among crews of such ships carrying ammunition were not great: they usually have  no
                    no grave save the sea
One of the ordinary seamen, firemen and stewards on board the Marquette included a relative of mine:
Hubert Vingoe of Scilly 1878-1915 age 37 is named on  Tower Hill Memorial which commemorates
men of the Navy and Fishing Fleets who gave their lives and have no grave but the sea
He was steward but I can find no other details of the  rest of the crew..
