Gwen VINGOE was living in Stocksfield, Northumberland in 1984 when she wrote a letter to Marie Vingoe McDonough (nee Chapman) in Melbourne, Australia. Marie Vingoe McDonough's daughter Susan visited her some time after.   Quote from Gwen Vingoe's letter:

".....my eldest brother and I went once to the Trevilley farm mentioned.  This was about thirty years ago. [c1954]. We forced our way through bracken and gorse down to the nearest piece of beach to try to find the deep caverns in Trevilley cliff.  We were not successful.....but as we were sitting among the stones in the bay the tide came in and the sun was low on the horizon.  There was a large boulder of red sandstone standing all by itself and when the sea surrounded it the waves were reflected on it and  for a few moments the effect really was ' like chains of fire ascending '  I think I have never seen anything similar before or since."

To read more about the "Chains of Fire: the Death Token of the Vingoes" and other Vingoe tales go HERE.

The headland here is formed entirely of granite so any red  seen was very probably either, from  the glittering quartzite bouncing back the last rays of the setting sun of the single  Rock mentioned here  and once known locally as the 'Diamond Horseman'. Alternatively, as the last rays of sun hit the gently lapping waters around its base, the reflected light dazzled the eye of anyone  looking in that direction. causing an effect akin to snow blindness.

Fact 1 James Henry Vingoe was originally a gardener but he travelled several times to Calumet and Hecla mines in Upper Peninsula ; Michigan. I have found him on trips between 1900 -1904 passing through Ellis Island. Below is a copy of the ships manifest for a voyage he took on board the S.S. New York which left Southampton on the 28th April 1900. James is listed as No 10 on the list amongst a group of Cornish miners who all state that they are going to stay with their Cousin James Glasson.

Cornish miners were always known as 'Cousin Jacks' because, it is said, if ever a mine manager wanted more men, he would ask a Cornishman if he knew anybody who would be suitable and the reply would always be - " 'es me 'ansum: me cousin Jack is just the boy for 'e! "

   George Davey: Mayor 1926-1927 & Alderman 1922-1948

George Davey [1874-1954] served on Strathfield Council for 26 years and was Mayor in 1926-27. Photo of George Davey was taken in 1938. Davey’s long period of involvement on Strathfield Council was marked by many achievements.  His period in office coincided with a rapid expansion in residential development in Strathfield and Davey advocated extensions of street planting schemes, acquisition of land for public parks and planting of trees and shrubs in parks, gardens and reserves.  When the Strathfield Railway Station was extended in the 1920’s, Davey insisted on acquiring additional land on the southern side of the Station and instead of the proposed road width of 40 feet, he demanded 100 feet.  Strathfield Council contributed £3000 to the road acquisition.  This land today is the Strathfield Town Centre.  Davey Square and Davey Square Memorial are named for him.

Davey was the managing director of flour millers Edwin Davey & Co.  His daughter Mabel, married aviator and flour miller Nigel Love.

George Davey was active in many community activities including the Strathfield Methodist Church and he was Treasurer of Methodist Ladies College [MLC] in Burwood for 25 years. He lived at ‘Koorianda’ 5-7 Broughton Rd, which is now heritage listed.

 NIGEL BORELAND LOVE (1892- 1979)

He was selected for training with 9 others at Ham Common, Sydney in 1916, joining the RFC thereafter, serving in France in No.3 Squadron with other Australians. After WW1 he returned to Australia and formed Australian Aircraft and Engineering Co. with Broadsmith (QV)) in 1919 with 4 Avro 504 aircraft operating out of newly leased Mascot Airfield.
Using Australian timber they commenced manufacturing the Avro and sold four to the Government for £7100. With floats attached the Avro gave joy -flights from Manly as shown. Photographs from the air became very popular and he is shown with Milton Kent in the rear with a camera in 1921. He went into the NSW Aerial Derby at Victoria Park in 1922 and won the handicap section. Eventually the company went into liquidation due to lack of Government contracts. To create further damage the Government also took over Mascot  Airfield.for it's own use!
He then joined his father-in-law's milling business, Edwin Davey & Sons, and later formed N.B. Love P/L in the milling industry himself. In WW2 he headed the NSW Air Training Corps as Wing Commander.

Note

So far little is known about this Richard Quance. Monica Bragg of Canada , who has provided a lot of the information on the Quance family, believes that he worked as a  telegraphist on the Transcontinental Telegraph line in South Africa. She wrote " I remember seeing a picture of him with an African crew. I also believe that he returned to England and married into the FRY family [of Fry's chocolates] but I have no proof of this and no details. His wife may have been called Elizabeth."

Fact 4.  Sometime in the 1890's the family emigrated to South Africa.

Fact 5. In 1881 the father of Ernest Arbuckle, ( husband of Violet Quance) was shown on his son's birth certificate as being the bandmaster of the 55th Regiment of Foot, based at Shorncliffe Camp, Kent.

Fact 6. Ernest Arbuckle became the bandmaster of the South African Police band after attending Kneller Hall, the school for military musicians in the UK..

Shorncliffe was a typical English Garrison. A report in 1890 in the Bombay Guardian said the following of the town:

One of the military stations in England to which troops from India go and come is Shorncliffe, a breezy upland on the coast of Kent. At its foot is the pretty little watering place of Sandgate . . .

The regular occupation of Shorncliffe Camp by the military changed the character of Sandgate. . Troops returning from the Crimean war, and leaving for the scenes of the Indian Mutiny, were expected to indulge their animal, nay beastly, propensities to the full. Sandgate at that time (1850) reeked with the trap-doors to hell. Low beer houses abounded on every hand.

Twenty five years have made great changes. The low beer houses have been swept away, the number of liquor houses of every kind are reduced by fully one third. The 'Balaclava', the 'Sebastopol', and the 'Inkerman' are again peaceful cottage homes, while other dens of infamy have entirely disappeared, rows of modern shops and handsome Queen Anne houses have take their place and quite altered Sandgate.
