Fact I : Parents of Henry are unconfirmed by any  baptismal record. They were probably John VINGOE: bt Jun 1742 Sennen-bur Aug 1794 Sennen. He marr.   Margaret ELLIS  1769 St Just. She was baptised 1752  St Buryan - buried Dec 1794 Sancreed as a 'widow'. When husband John VINGOE died Margaret had probably returned to her home parish of Sancreed. Their first-born child, Margaret Ellis Vingoe, was bt 1770 St Just. Son Henry was probably their second born c1772. There is also another possible daughter. Mary Vingoe c1775 had a base born son baptised as Thomas VINGOE in 1800  Paul.   He  went on to entered the Coastguard service. He married 07 Dec 1830  at Burham in KENT a Louisa SEYMOOR.

Fact 5  Henry Vingoe burial : Paul Parish Record Henry Vingoe, Age 73

Fact 6  Death notice  in "The Cornwall Royal Gazette" Feb 17 1843  Henry  Vingoe "died from starvation"

Fact 7   Grace Mann bapt.  & marriage:  Paul Parish Record

Fact 8   Grace Vingoe burial :  Paul Parish Record

Fact 9   Grace Vingoe died during the cholera epidemic and was buried in a mass grave in the meadow field, acquired for the purpose of burying all the many victims. The headstones, now arranged around the perimeter wall of the 'Cholera Graveyard' on Trungle Moor, do NOT relate to those buried within  in a mass grave. Their identity can only be deduced from the burial records of the appropriate date. The headstones on display were removed  from the graveyard that lies behind the Church Schoolroom situated on the  local village 'Green', which is opposite the Parish Church, and previously known as the 'Common'. The  headstones  were removed to their present location on the moor when there was a major clearance and closure of the 'overflow' schoolroom site in the 1950's. The bodies, however, were never exhumed.   No church burials now take place in either burying ground. only cremated remains can be interred.

Maggie Humphreys, 18, charwoman, and Bessie Humphreys 15 domestic servant, are living with their widowed Aunt Grace This move was probably due to the ages of the adult male & female offspring in the  HUMPHREYS household. Grace had two girls and a boy only 10 years, so it made for easier sleeping arrangements. The elder nieces probably assisted their widowed aunt with the finances and domestic  running of the house-hold.

Shop in  the "Narrows" is single story at rear entrance  in c 1890.                                                             By 1915 it was a two story building when this painting was taken to Australia.

I remember this shop in the early 1950's when it was the 'Gem' Fish & Chip Shop & Cafe. Its best sales night was when  Penlee Quarry held its annual bonfire and  firework display                                            on the Quarry Tips and everyone wanted fish & chips to eat on their way home.  It  was a  gift shop for a while, after the couple retired  from frying -up and closed in the 1980's

ABEDNEGO HARVEY

Abednego  [b 31 Jul 1884 at Florence Place, Newlyn (1891 census) later moved  with his family to 2 Bon Villas, Paul Hill.

Abednego married Mary Annie Vingoe [b 31 Jul 1883] on 21 Oct 1908.  Mary Annie had been living at a store owned by a Mr Reseigh at Fore Street, Newlyn.  The descendants have post cards that were sent from Abednego to Mary Annie   addressed to "c/o Mr Reseigh’s store". Prior to his marriage Abednego was living at  Charles Street. Newlyn. Abednego and Mary moved into the home above Mary's family grocery store at  Fore St. Newlyn, which became their family home until they migrated to Australia.   There were four children born in their Fore St. home - Sylvia, Harold, Mary and Abednego.  Sylvia died in 1911 age 9 months and is buried with her grandfather, Abednego, at Paul cemetery.

Abednego did not wish to follow his forefathers and become a fisherman or seaman and employment was difficult to find, he could see no future in Penzance so decided to emigrate to Australia. In March 1913, leaving his children, Harold and Mary and his wife one month pregnant in Newlyn, Abednego sailed to Australia endeavouring to provide a better life for his family. As money was a problem for Abednego at the time, his passage to Australia was paid by his uncle William, a chemist and his mother's brother. He was a Grocer at the time, probably working at his in-laws store.   Although his family were land holders in Penzance, Abednego was not going to receive anything from the properties as they were going to be left to his sisters. He was a proficient organist and would have been the official organist at the local Newlyn Wesleyan Church, had he remained in Newlyn.

After leaving from Tilbury, London, as a 3rd class passenger and a 16 week voyage, he arrived in Sydney 03 Jul 1913, on the "Osterley".  In Australia, Abednego found work with an engineering firm for a short period, then with the Postmaster Generals Department as a Postal Worker,  a position that he held until his retirement at the age of 62.

Mary Annie, with children Harold, Mary Annie, and Abednego, sailed from London via the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, on the ship “Commonwealth” arriving in Sydney on the 30 Oct 1915.   En route, in the Indian Ocean, a cruising enemy submarine was sighted, thus forcing the ship to stop all engines and turn off all lighting to prevent detection.

Abednego and his family lived at Henrietta St. Waverley for a number of years. His mother Jane and  sister Winifred joined them, after they too had  immigrated, arriving in Sydney on  26 Feb 1920 on the "Megantic". Abednego and Mary had another four children in Australia -- Betty,  Peggy,  Arthur Thomas and Richard.  The family moved to Waterloo Road, Greenacre  for four years, then to Broadway at Punchbowl  for three years and then made one final move to the home they had built in 1928 at 58 Catherine Street, Punchbowl. This became the Harvey home, the only home that all the grandchildren knew as Nan and Grandpa's.   We remember Nan’s rock cakes, fruit cake and ginger beer in large earthen-ware bottles, bought from the man with the horse and cart: also the tea she would serve us from the saucer.   Grandpa taught most of his grandchildren to walk. We grandchildren were often in trouble as our face, hands and clothes would often be coloured purple, from eating mulberries and climbing the large mulberry tree, in their backyard.

The family became involved in the Greenacre Methodist Church, Abednego being a foundation member.   He became a lay preacher and wrote several hymns for the church. His preaching days ceased when confronted by the local minister regarding the content of his sermons as they did not reflect the writings within the Bible.  Abednego questioned the minister asking him if he really believed that the whale had swallowed Jonah.   The minister replied that if the Bible stated that Jonah had swallowed the whale he would believe it.   With this difference in their methods and beliefs Abednego did not ever preach again.

After his retirement, Abednego became keen in playing his weird home made musical instruments and he was quite a menace with them, insisting on playing them at the least provocation. They all sounded ghastly, but it did give him an interest in his retirement, was the comment from by his son Arthur. Abednego died in his sleep from heart failure on 08 Dec 1957.His ashes were scattered in the garden of his son Harold's home at Warejee Street, Kingsgrove.  Mary Annie died 03 Oct 1960, requesting her ashes be scattered in Newlyn Harbour. Daughters Betty & Peggy were not able to achieve this and  so her ashes were eventually scattered in the north eastern corner of the gardens of Greenacre Methodist Church. The church altar is dedicated to Abednego and Mary Annie through monies donated by the Harvey family when the church was refurbished.   Their daughter Peggy, still attended this church until her death in 1999.

St. Faith's Diocesan Convent, known the 'House of Mercy', was first established at Truro in 1861. In 1864 it moved its  location to the outskirts of  Lostwithiel, half a mile from the railway station. Its founder was Rev. William Everest, Chaplain of Bodmin Jail, and the land was donated by Thomas  James Agar-Robartes, 1st Baron of Lanhydrock. It was built on a hill, once the site of a gun emplacement in the Civil War. Overlooking the town of Lostwithiel it had beautiful views over the Fowey Valley and Restormel Castle.

The building was designed in the Gothic style by one George Edmund Street R.A., an eminent architect of the day with strong connections to the Pre-Raphaelites. It had a private chapel dedicated to St. Faith with a sculptured altar piece of marble and alabaster. A Licence to perform divine service in the 'chapel or oratory' was granted by St Winnows Parish Church in 1864 & again in 1876 for the newly erected chapel. The West Wing of the building was added over two periods in 1875 and 1883. The convent was run by the 'Sisters of Mercy', a community of nuns from St Mary's, Wantage, Oxfordshire and had funds amounting to £22 yearly which it distributed annually at Christmas in small 'doles'

It also took in "wayward" girls: females who had been arrested for various 'misdemeanours' and brought before the local Magistrate. They faced the prospect of either imprisonment in Bodmin Jail,  or entering a 'penitentiary' run by the sisters of Mercy.  They were put to work in the laundry, which served  many households over a wide area, including the Lanhydrock Estate. The girls were also 'trained up' for  domestic work and many girls went into 'service' on leaving. The convent closed in late 1940, and in 1949 the house was purchased by the Youth Hostel Association, who ran it until 1970. The property was then purchased and underwent its first conversion into  private accommodation.

On 14 September 1915 the Battalion left for France where it served from 1915 -1919.

William Henry VANSICKLE was part of a 6 man crew on a bomb-throwing catapult called the West Spring Gun.

This was designed in 1915 to throw a hand grenade high into the air and to fall into the enemy trenches.

Both father and son  were assigned with  the rest of the Canadian units to Vimy Ridge.

                                                                   Vimy:  Canadians Trucks

Ernest was a Signaller  and  later that year he was badly wounded and in hospital while his father remained in action with the Brantford Bomb throwers On 08 Aug 1916  William H and Ernest were both hospitalised in England:   Father  William H  in Gosport, Hampshire and  son Ernest  in Ramsgate, Kent,  where it  was thought his arm might have to be amputated.

By 29 Sep 1916  Ernest was now a Sergeant, and was invalided home to the Military Hospital in Toronto. He was severely wounded at Vimy Ridge as  the result of a bursting shell.

Father William H remained in France but by 22 Nov 1917 he was on the staff at a [military?] hospital in Bunston, Derbyshire,  where he was badly burnt on the hands & body as a result of an accident. This family had  more than their fair share of bad luck as 8 year old  son, Eugene was at that time recovering from an illness in the Brant Sanatorium.

Father William Henry  retuned home  at last on 23 March 1918.  So many men did not!  'Lest we Forget'

Edgar and Edith  MOTT moved from Ontario to Manitoba and then to Saskatchewan, where they had a farm homestead from 1903: this has stayed in the family. Their granddaughter, Edith King, lives there with her husband and family. They celebrated the centenary of Mott Farm recently and the road it is on is now named Mott!

From a letter Cousin Edith received from the National Children's Home I also found out the story behind the emigration of the four children of William Henry Vingoe to Canada. After his death in 1882, Sarah Ann, his widow, was finding it hard to make ends meet. She applied to the National Children's Home to take Edith, who was received into the home on 17 March 1885.

The letter confirms that  Sarah Ann earned two shillings and sixpence per week as a needlewoman and so was unable to maintain her family on her  limited income,

"Edith " lived at our London Home until emigrating  to our Canada Branch in Hamilton in 1890. She was described as an honest, good tempered, spirited child.  She was placed as a servant in the home of Rev Dr and Mrs Cochrane at Brantford.  She was very keen to train as a nurse, but was not accepted because she was not tall enough.  It appears that she then worked at our Hamilton Branch until the late 1890s and she married Edgar Mott in 1899.  She returned to England for a short while in 1898 and visited her mother. During this time she worked for a while at our Alverstoke Branch on the South Coast, looking after crippled and delicate children, returning to Canada in 1899.  She last wrote to National Children's Home in 1956, with the help of her daughter Mrs S W Jefferson.  She was then living in New Westminster.  She was then aged 84."

Elizabeth (Bessie) Roberts Vingoe [c1872] "was admitted to the Home 13 May 1889, aged 17.  She had been in service in Penzance, but times were hard, she was unhappy and her mother felt she would have a better chance in life if she was able to go abroad. Bessie sailed to Canada on  17 May 1889 and was placed in the household of Rev and Mrs Holmes at Stratford and Owensands, where she stayed until May 1892, when she moved to Toronto, Ontario.  The last letter on her file was from the home of a Mr and Mrs Manton.  Bessie had a considerable amount of ill health".

William Henry Vingoe  b 01 Feb 1880 "went to Canada in March 1896 after an application from his mother, who felt he would have a better chance in life.  After a brief stay in Hamilton, he went to live with Bessie and her husband at Brantford. He was there for three years and then worked for a firm called James Smith & Co, making harness and saddlery for horses and goats, returning to Hamilton for holidays. These three people kept in touch with each other and with mother."

Mabel Vingoe  b 1877, youngest daughter of  Sarah & William, was never admitted to the National Children's Home.  She married William Thomas Jordan  at St Peter's Newlyn  in 1898  age 20 yrs, and shortly after the birth of their first child Mabel in 1899, they moved to Ontario, Canada. William Thomas Jordan was recorded as being a 'Foundry Labourer' in the 1901  Canadian Census. Mother, Mabel  Jordan  is recorded on 1930 Census for San Francisco, living with her sons, Thomas Jordan aged 28,  Horace Vingoe Jordan and daughter Nora Jordan .

One day in the 1980's we were walking along the Truro River, near Victoria Gardens, when we saw the remains of "Girl Sybil" hauled up on the foreshore. Unfortunately we had no camera at the time and by our next visit all trace was gone. We later discovered it had been restored and now have a picture of the finished project seen in Newlyn  tied up on the North Pier as she did many times in the past .

GALLIPOLI CAMPAIGN

HUMPHRYS, William V,  Seaman Royal Naval Reserve  Chatham No 3204

Battleship  Goliath lost 13 May 1915.

The Gallipoli "military" as distinct from the  "naval" campaign started with Allied landings around the southern Gallipoli Peninsula. This was not altogether successful.  Meanwhile many ships were  also sitting ducks and one of these was 'Goliath', a  pre-Dreadnought battleship, torpedoed and sunk by a German-commanded, Turkish torpedo boat. Three torpedoes struck Goliath, causing a  massive explosion-the ship capsized almost immediately taking 570 of the 700 strong crew to the bottom, including Captain Shelford. Only 20  officers and 160 men survived. Many of these men came from the small fishing villages around Devon  & Cornwall in the  south-west, in particular from those of Mousehole, Newlyn and Penzance, where the crew were members of the many closely related families.

TherThere were just three-and-a-half minutes between                                             the torpedoes striking and the Goliath sinking Goliath sinking..

Walter James Breach TRELOAR who died during the sinking of H.M.S. Hood, 24 May 1941 age 39
Service No: P/J 103386  Leading Seaman /Acting Petty Officer  R.N.  H.M.S. Hood
Remembered on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL  Panel 47, Column 1.

Son of Jessie Treloar &  husband of Hilda Grace Treloar of Highbury, London.

In May 1941, battle cruiser Hood with the battleship Prince of Wales were ordered to intercept the German Battleship Bismarck  and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugene who were en-route to attack the Royal Navy's Atlantic convoys. On 24 May 1941, early in the battle of the Denmark Strait, HMS Hood was struck by several German shells. It is believe they must have hit either Hood's aft magazine, where a hundred tons of cordite were stored, or perhaps her torpedoes, as she  exploded and sank within two minutes. The crew of "The Mighty Hood" numbered 1,421.  There were only three survivors –  no bodies were recovered..
