Joan Lily, Hope Watson, VINGOE, Joan Lily Hope (nee) Watson was born on Lorraine Road, London, 5 March 1918. She came to Canada as a young child with her father, Harry Waldo Watson and his British bride, Ethel Gertrude. After living on a farm in western Canada, they returned to Toronto where she enjoyed the friendship of her grandfather, the Canadian poet, Dr. Albert Durrant Watson. When World War Two started, she enrolled in nursing school under the general auspices of the Canadian Red Cross, and returned to Britain in a North Atlantic Convoy. There she served as a Lieut. in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps for the duration of the war, at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead where she worked in the burns unit. After the war, she and John married and had two sons. They moved to Kitchener-Waterloo and lived on Kingsley Crescent. After the passing of her husband, Joan returned to Toronto and lived in the heart of Toronto where she made new friends while keeping the old. Despite increasingly painful arthritis she continued to explore her neighbourhood and enjoy life to the fullest. Her friendship and empathy were an inspiration to everyone who knew her until the end when she left this world with dignity and grace. She was buried alongside her late husband in Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener, Ontario, Canada on 12 Sep 2008, at 10 a.m. Joan's Grandfather was a published poet and you can read some of his poems by clicking HERE.
