.....................[mentioned 1656 in the Will of father, John & also in 1685 in the will of motherJoan]
2 William VINGOE: c1640 - died before 1695 Sennen.
William Vingoe [Snr] c1635 was mentioned in the 1657 Will of his father, John VINGOE, but not in that of his mother Joan in 1685 as had inherited his property under his father John's Will of 1657. His son, William Jnr in order to legally witness his grandmother Joan's will of 1685 was presumably at least 21 yrs by that date. I have therefore assumed a birth date of 1663 for him: and for his father William [Snr] a marriage date of c1661, and a possible birth date of c1640. Joan must therefore have been born by at least c.1620 and was probably the 3rd wife of John Vingoe c1580 who married twice before in Mawgan in Meneage. I have entered the sons of his and her "Loins" as he states them in order of mention in the will. Presumably, William was the eldest and at his father's death in 1657 was about 17 years old. Before the death of Joan sons Martin, Peter and Jenkin had died and John and William had married. John had a son and a daughter who both married and moved to Paul Parish. William has two sons ,William & Henry, who remained in Sennen. To follow this line go here

Fact 1 : Henry & Alexander VINGOE The baptisms of both sons are badly entered in the margins of Sennen Registers Henry's looks like either bt 28 Nov 1753 or 1758. Alexander's was 14 Jul 1758 If Henry was baptised in 1753 he was 3 years old before his parents married. It was not uncommon for children to be born before their parents married. If baptised in 1758 it was 4 months after the baptism of brother Alex, also in 1758. Their burials give both their ages at death as 80. Henry died three years before brother Alex, which was probably their distance apart at birth ! Therefore, I have recorded Henry as baptised 1753 & Alexander as baptised 1758. Their date of birth was known to them alone! Barbara Mills c1734 was about 19 at birth of son Henry, a minor & unmarried. Her parents must have with-held their permission for her to marry Henry Vingoe, or perhaps no priest was available in the 'Royal Peculiar' of St. Buryan, which also included the churches of Sennen and St. Levan. They could have married in Barbara's home parish of St. Just, where her father, Alex Mills, was referred to as a "Gent "and who could have afforded a license for them to marry anywhere without the necessary calling of 'banns'. They eventually married in Madron 30 July 1756, which was not the home parish of either bride or groom. Perhaps this place was chosen in order to avoid gossip, as it was some distance from St Just. In April 1854 'Encounter' took part in joint British-American operations against Chinese Imperial troops in Shanghai. The 2nd Opium War broke out in Oct 1856 and 'Encounter' was sent from Hong Kong up the Pearl River to Canton. Between Feb 1858 and Sep 1859 she was refitted in Devonport, and on commissioning, escorted gunboats to China via Madeira, Rio de Janeiro and Singapore. Between 11 May and 15 Dec 1862 'Encounter' headed up a squadron of French and English gunboats which supported Chinese troops in action against rebel and pirate forces who were attacking the treaty ports.

WATSON &
Mary Ann ALDRED
Albert
Durrant WATSON b 08 Jan 1859 Dixie,
Mississauga, Upper Canada
d 1926
He was first
educated in the schools of Peel
County and studied at the
Toronto Normal School and taught for
a short period at Malton
(Mississauga) and Oakville before
turning to the study of medicine. He
obtained an M.D. from Victoria
College, Cobourg, in 1883. In 1890
he would receive another from the
University of Toronto in recognition
of his graduation as a licentiate
from the Royal College of Physicians
of Edinburgh in 1883. He
successfully practised medicine for
more than four decades, serving on
staff at three hospitals, including
Toronto Western. Watson was an avid amateur
astronomer and his papers in this
field include “The reformation and
simplification of the calendar”
(1896), “Astronomy in Canada”
(1917), and “Astronomy: a cultural
avocation” (1918).
He had joined the Astronomical and
Physical Society of Toronto in 1892;
which developed into the Royal
Astronomical Society of Canada.
he served as first
Vice-President 1910 - 1915 and as
President in 1916-1917. He also had
many musical and literary interests.
During the early decades of the
1900s several of his poems appeared
in Methodist and Presbyterian
hymnals. In 1908 he wrote an
alternative wording for “O Canada”
which was widely acclaimed. It is
still used in many churches. A HYMN FOR CANADA In 1908 Watson published The wing
of the wild-bird and other poems. It
was followed by Love and the
universe, The immortals and other
poems (1913), Heart of the hills
(poems) (1917), The dream of God (a
poem) (1922), and Woman: a poem
(1923). Editor Lorne Albert Pierce*
of the Ryerson Press, a friend of
Watson’s, wrote in 1923: “We
anticipate a selected edition of his
poetry very soon. This ought to
establish him securely among the
great names of our native
literature.” The poetical works of
Albert Durrant Watson appeared the
following year. He was strongly
influenced by the “confederation
poets,” including Charles George
Douglas Roberts* and William Bliss
Carman, and echoed their themes of
nationalism and romanticism. Like
Carman, he was also drawn to
mystical subjects. As a prose author, Watson
produced several philosophical
studies, including The sovereignty
of ideals ([1903]), The sovereignty
of character: lessons from the life
of Jesus of Nazareth (1906), and
Three comrades of Jesus (1919). He
wrote the first volume in Pierce’s
Makers of Canadian literature
series, on the poet Robert Winkworth
Norwood* (1923). Though all
reviewers were not so positive,
Edwin John Pratt* wrote that the
“task of interpretation has been
accomplished with insight and
refinement.” Watson had also
collaborated with Pierce in
compiling the noted anthology Our
Canadian literature: representative
prose and verse (1922). While he received recognition for
his literary efforts, Watson
achieved notoriety through his
psychical research. From 1918 to
1920 a series of seances was held by
medium Louis Benjamin, usually in
the Watson home, with a stenographer
present to record the proceedings.
Among those present on at least one
occasion was Flora MacDonald Denison
[Merrill], like Watson a devotee of
Walt Whitman. Watson became
president of the Association for
Psychical Research of Canada and
reported on his study of the seance
communications, purportedly dictated
by the spirits of departed
celebrities, in The twentieth plane:
a psychic revelation (1918) and
Birth through death, the ethics of
the twentieth plane: a revelation
received through the psychic
consciousness of Louis Benjamin
(1920). During the first weeks of January
1919 a debate on The twentieth plane
was held in Toronto newspapers.
Author Lucy Maud Montgomery*
described the publication in her
journal that March as “the book
which has made such a sensation in
Toronto” (and as “absolute poppycock
– utterly unconvincing” despite her
own interest in life after death).
Watson gained many supporters, but
others publicly ridiculed him. He
resigned his position as leader of
the Bible class. Two years later he
dissociated himself from Benjamin,
declaring his scepticism about
mediums (though reaffirming his
belief in the spiritual world), and
withdrew from his editorship of the
Twentieth Plane: a Magazine of
Psychic Content. He concluded his
study of “spiritual laws and psychic
forces” with the publication of
Mediums and mystics . . . (1923),
written in collaboration with
Margaret Lawrence, whom he would
make his literary executor. In 1920, in the earliest days of
the Baha’i community in Canada,
Watson had converted to that faith
(as did Lawrence the following
year). In the view of Lorne Pierce,
“He recognized no national,
ecclesiastical or any other
frontier, but searched the world
through for truth. . . . He sifted
the philosophies, the religions and
the humanities of the world. . . .
No man during this generation in
Toronto ever entertained so many
strange faces, tongues, sects,
systems, enthusiasms, artists,
poets, fanatics, sages as he did; no
home was more the ante-chamber to
the universe.” The literary style epitomized by
Watson was eclipsed not long after
his death by modern realism, but his
dedication to artistic and
scientific endeavours will mark his
place in Canada’s history.

I think this might
be the burial of Anne's brother, Daniel ELLIS.
Anne was baptised in Dec 1825, just a month before her
elder brother Daniel died. The Parish Clerk must
have got them confused and assumed the younger ELLIS infant
[Anne ] had died.

painting by Keith A. Griffin of the S.S. Great Britain in 1843 Henry
&
Margaret Trembath emigrated to Australia in September 1868 aboard the
S.S. Great Britain. The standard of living on board was far superior
to that found on the majority of other ships sailing at the time. The
accommodation was more lavish and the first-class menu listed a choice
of twelve dishes. On the long voyages passengers on sailing ships were
expected to help in the working of the ship which, in many cases, was
a welcomed break to the monotony.

b 14 Oct 1774. Sennen -
died 16 Mar 1845 Tredannack, Gulval.
Occupation Farmer...............unmarried.....................No Issue
Land
& Holdings of William Vingoe
Fact
1 Will of William Vingoe, written 8 Dec 1842 : Proved 19
Mar 1845:
Fact 2
A caveat was entered by his brother Israel Vingoe, an
executor to another "pretended" Will dated 1 Sep
1843. In a hearing in the 'Archdeaconry Court' Israel's lawyer
failed to prove this second will legitimate. The court
declared " that the second pretended will of the said deceased
bearing the date the first day of September one thousand eight
hundred and forty three, in which the said Israel Vingoe is
pretended to be one of the Executors, to be null and void and invalid to all
intents and purposes and to have no force or validity in law
whatsoever....." The decision was declared in the
Parish Church
of St Mary's Penzance 16 April 1847. [see below]
Fact
3 William died unmarried and with no issue. He left
everything to a nephew, Richard Nicholls of Germoe, son of his
sister Grace Nicholls. He also left £350 to William
Lawry, farmer of Gulval, husband of his niece Mary Nicholls,
daughter of his sister Grace. This money was payable
12 months after Williams death with " interest of 5
per cent per annum payable " There were also small legacies:-
Brother Israel of St Just-in-Penwith, £1 : sister Jane, wife of
Thomas Semmens of Sancreed, £5 : Barbara, wife of
John Vingoe of Sennen £1: Christiana, wife of Edward Perrow of St
Just £1: Also annuities were to be
paid to brother Stephen , £3 pa : Anne, wife of
Thomas Ellis of Sennen, £5 pa : Grace Nicholas, widow of
Gulval, £5 pa : Sarah Blight, widow of Ludgvan, £5pa
These legacies and annuities were to be paid out of the rents
from the Escalls property but ceased on the death of any of the
beneficiaries. The whole of his "......... freehold and leasehold
estate situate in Escalls and all other real and personal estate
and effects, money and securities for money, goods, chattels,
estate and effects of what nature or kind whatsoever and
wherever situate lying and being of which I shall die possessed
or become entitled unto at my death, I give, devise and bequeath the
same and every part thereof ,unto my nephew, Richard Nicholls of the
parish of Germoe in the said county, shopkeeper............" William
left little room for doubt about his intentions in this will,
written in December of 1842. He had removed from Sennen after a lifetime of living there to live
with his sister Grace in Gulval. There was obviously more influence
on him from in her household and perhaps he was under
some pressure from his younger relatives to settle his property. We
also do not know his mental state at the time. Perhaps we shall never know the truth
of the business as I think the records of the proceedings in the
Archdeaconry Court of Exeter were destroyed in the bombing
during WW2.
Update
Israel later appealed to the higher,
recently introduced, Civil Courts and won the family claim on William's property in Escalls and elsewhere. Please go to

The
West Briton Newspaper 1873. An
old man, Israel Vingoe aged 83 years has this week cut an acre field
of wheat on his own in a day. When he had finish he asked if there
would be another to cut the following day. He was assisted by one
woman who bound and stacked the sheaves as he went. Cornish Telegraph, Penzance, 2nd September 1874 "Mr
Israel Vingoe of St Just (in Penwith ), now over 87 years of age, has
this harvest season, mowed five acres of corn. At Hendra Farm he mowed
an acre and a half in twelve hours. Note:
Israel's age is in question in these two reports. He was baptised in
1790 but we do not know how old he was at that time, however on his
gravestone it states he was 88 year old in 1877. ........................7

Clemence Vingoe joined the Cornwall Police force on the 1st of October
1857 giving his age as 20 years. His police number was P.C.109.
His first posting was to Bodmin on the 18th of December 1857.
He was single and had
been employed previously as a miner. He was promoted on the 24th of
June 1860 to a first class constable and a son,
William James, was born
and bt 30 Sept
1860 at Luxulyan On the 1861 Census his
address is given as Cassacawn Hamlet on Bodmin Moor but later
that year on 10 Nov 1861 he was transferred to Helston . He
resigned from the Police service on the 4th of January 1863.
James's
wife Harriet gave birth to another son, Francis Charles Vingoe
in March of 1863. Sometime after leaving the police
James joined the Royal Navy and by 1864 he has aboard 'HMS Bombay'
when she visited South America. Whilst the ship was
in

the 'Bombay' caught fire off the coast of Uruguay and
sank with great loss of life. James was among those injured in the
fire. He was sent back to the UK on another ship, but died from his injuries
and was buried at sea. His two children,
William and Francis

WW2
Note
Rodney Clarence Vingoe is remembered on the Darwin War
Memorial in Australia's, Northern Territory. He joined the
Australian Army Service Corp as a Volunteer and was
appointed to the AIF 2/3 Motor Ambulance Corp. On the 7th of November
1944 he died fighting the Japanese in Siam (Tailand) and is buried at
the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery.
The notorious Burma-Siam railway, built by
Commonwealth, Dutch and American prisoners of war, was a Japanese
project driven by the need for improved communications to support the
large Japanese army in Burma. During its construction, approximately
13,000 prisoners of war died and were buried along the railway. An
estimated 80,000 to 100,000 civilians also died in the course of the
project, chiefly forced labour brought from Malaya and the Dutch East
Indies, or conscripted in Siam (Thailand) and Burma (Myanmar). Two
labour forces, one based in Siam and the other in Burma worked from
opposite ends of the line towards the centre. The Japanese aimed at
completing the railway in 14 months and work began in October 1942.
The line, 424 kilometres long, was completed by December 1943. The
graves of those who died during the construction and maintenance of
the Burma-Siam railway (except for the Americans, whose remains were
repatriated) were transferred from camp burial grounds and isolated
sites along the railway into three cemeteries at Chungkai and
Kanchanaburi in Thailand and Thanbyuzayat in Myanmar.
KANCHANABURI WAR
CEMETERY is only a short distance from the site of the former 'Kanburi',
the prisoner of war base camp through which most of the prisoners
passed on their way to other camps. It was created by the Army Graves
Service who transferred to it all graves along the southern section of
railway, from Bangkok to Nieke. Some 300 men who died during an
epidemic at Nieke camp were cremated and their ashes now lie in two
graves in the cemetery. The names of these men are inscribed on panels
in the shelter pavilion. There are now 5,084 Commonwealth casualties
of the Second World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery. There
are also 1,896 Dutch war graves. Within the entrance building to the
cemetery will be found the KANCHANABURI MEMORIAL, recording the names
of 11 men of the army of undivided India buried in Muslim cemeteries
in Thailand, where their graves could not be maintained. The cemetery
was designed by Colin St Clair Oakes.

.
The early records of the names of Permewan/Permuen &
Tremewan/Termewan were, apparently, interchangeable .
Nicholas
Permuen bt 19 May 1719: St Buryan, son of Thomas & Joan
Permewan/Tremewan: married a Philadelphia ?
circa 1754 This was possibly a Philadelphia Bottrell :
baptised 19 Mar 1722 , Sennen : dau of John Bottrell.
Nicolas
Permuen & Philadelphia were almost certainly the parents of
Philadelphia Permuen baptised 09 Jan 1762 St Buryan. This
Philadelphia married John Bottrell 20
Dec 1788 St Buryan with her name written as
"Tremewan".

Joan Lily, Hope Watson,
VINGOE, Joan Lily Hope (nee) Watson was born on Lorraine
Road, London, 5 March 1918. She came to Canada as a
young child with her father, Harry Waldo Watson and his
British bride, Ethel Gertrude. After living on a farm in
western Canada, they returned to Toronto where she
enjoyed the friendship of her grandfather, the Canadian
poet, Dr. Albert Durrant Watson. When World War Two
started, she enrolled in nursing school under the
general auspices of the Canadian Red Cross, and returned
to Britain in a North Atlantic Convoy. There she served
as a Lieut. in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps
for the duration of the war, at Queen Victoria Hospital,
East Grinstead where she worked in the burns unit.
After the war, she and John married and had two sons.
They moved to Kitchener-Waterloo and lived on Kingsley
Crescent. After the passing of her husband, Joan
returned to Toronto and lived in the heart of Toronto
where she made new friends while keeping the old.
Despite increasingly painful arthritis she continued to
explore her neighbourhood and enjoy life to the fullest.
Her friendship and empathy were an inspiration to
everyone who knew her until the end when she left this
world with dignity and grace. She was buried alongside
her late husband in Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener,
Ontario, Canada on 12 Sep 2008, at 10 a.m.

A HYMN FOR CANADA
(Tune, 0h Canada)
Lord of the lands, beneath Thy bending skies,
On field and flood, where'er our banner flies,
Thy people lift their hearts to Thee,
Their grateful voices raise:
May our Dominion ever be
A temple to Thy praise,
Thy will alone let all enthrone.
Lord of the lands, make Canada Thine own.
Almighty Love, by Thy mysterious power,
In wisdom guide, with faith and freedom dower;
Be ours a nation evermore
That no oppression blights.
Where justice rules from shore to shore,
From Lakes to Northern Lights.
May Love alone for wrong atone;
Lord of the lands, make Canada Thine own.
Lord of the worlds, with strong eternal hand,
Hold us in honour, truth and self-command;
The loyal heart, the constant mind,
The courage to be true,
Our wide-extending empire bind,
And all the earth renew.
Thy- name be known through every zone;
Lord of the worlds, make all the lands Thine own.

James & Jane of Carnyorth occ Miner
The family seemed to have sadness
follow them as not long after the children also lost their Uncle, James PASCOE.
He died suddenly at work
on 18 Feb 1895 age 48. James was by
then a 'Hewer' at Oatlands Colliery in County Durham.
A Mines Inspection showed that the
ventilation was good, so there was no reason to suppose that death was due to
other than natural causes.
James must have moved to the coal pits of Durham to find better
paid work, but coal was a very different prospect from iron , lead or tin!
His death was reported in the
Whitehaven Newspapers, the area where he had previously worked as a 'hard rock'
miner.
Sudden Death In The Pit At Oatlands
The inhabitants of Pica and district were much shocked on
receiving the news that Mr. James Pascoe had died very
suddenly while working down the colliery at Oatlands on
Monday afternoon. Deceased, who was 48 years of age,
was working along with his son, and the two were almost
completing the day's work when the father complained of
feeling unwell, and without further warning he fell back
and expired. The deceased had lived at Pica for a number
of years, and previous to that resided for about ten years
at Egremont, where he was
well known and much esteemed.
He leaves a wife and six children,
three of whom are adult.
